Sambhar Rice is one of the daily foods from Tamil Cuisine.. Dal and Rice cooked with vegetables and spices makes a wonderful flavorful One pot Meal.. Generally served with Appalam (Papad) and curd.. This bachelor special recipe can be prepared in jiffy… I love such healthy and easy recipes in cold days. Its a complete meal..

There may be other authentic ways to make sambhar rice, but this recipe gives perfect and delicious one pot meal … This is how I make at home, I learnt this dish from my MIL.

  • Few Curry leaves
  • A small piece of Turmerind, soaked in water
  • 1 tsp Sambhar Masala
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Red chilli powder (optional)

Till time , cut all the veggies and keep aside..

In a cooker take oil, once hot add mustard seeds. When crackle sounds reduces add asafoetida.. Now add onions and curry leaves .. Saute for 2 mins..

Once done, add other veggies and saute for 2 mins. Sprinkle some salt..

Now add all the spices (Sambhar Masala , Turmeric Powder and Red chilli powder)  and mix well.

Add soaked dal rice and 2 glass of water… Adjist salt. mix well and allow it to start boiling on medium flame.Make sure the  consistency of rice is bit loose. It wont be like normal rice or khichdi.. so add water accordingly .

Now add squeezed water from soaked turmerind . Stir occassionally ..

Close the lid and cook for 3 to 4 whistles on medium flame. Switch off the gas. Allow it to cool completely.

Open the lid and stir  nicely.   Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with Appalam (papad).

Hope you all will love this easy and healthy rice variety.

Happy Cooking 🙂 🙂
